Five Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in 2007 Naogaon Murder Case

Naogaon: A court here today sentenced five individuals to life term imprisonment in connection with a 2007 murder case in Mahadevpur upazila of the district. Additional District and Sessions Judge Ferdous Wahid delivered the verdict this afternoon.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court also imposed a fine of Taka 50,000 on each convict, with a provision for an additional six months of imprisonment in case of default. The individuals convicted are Shahidul Islam, 50, son of Tashir Uddin, along with his brothers Abul Kalam Azad, 55, and Abdus Salam, 60, Abdus Salam’s son Ashraf, 40, all residents of Raigaon village, and Ibrahim Hossain, 60, son of Subid Sonar from Atura village in Mahadevpur upazila.



Public prosecutor Saikat Ilias Kabir stated that 11 persons were acquitted as the charges against them were not substantiated. The prosecution revealed that on April 24, 2007, Shahidul and Abdus Salam led an attack on Fazlur Rahman, using local weapons, which resulted in his death due to a land dispute in Raigaon village.



On the day of the incident, Fazlur Rahman’s wife, Shahnaz Begum, lodged a murder case with Mahadevpur Police Station. The investigation officer initially filed a charge-sheet against 17 individuals on July 24, 2008. Subsequently, the CID conducted an investigation, leading to a charge-sheet against 19 people.



During the trial, three of the accused passed away, leaving 16 individuals to face charges. After examining evidence and testimonies from 22 witnesses, the judge found the five convicts guilty and delivered the judgment.
