Chattogram: A court in Chattogram has sentenced five individuals to death for the murder of college student Fosiur Rahman Shawon, which took place 18 years ago. The verdict was announced in the afternoon by Sixth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the condemned convicts are Bellal Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Shahid Raja, Al Amin Gazi, and Md Sohel. Chattogram Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed that although 15 people were accused in the case, the court sentenced five to death while acquitting the remaining 10 due to insufficient evidence.

The case details reveal that on July 24, 2007, Shawon was strangled with a towel by muggers who boarded his CNG-run auto-rickshaw intending to rob him. He was traveling from a coaching center at GEC intersection to Halishahar when the incident occurred. Following the murder, Shawon’s uncle, Khalilur Rahman, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station.

The court arrived at its decision after evaluating testimonies from 13 witnesses.
