Dhaka: A court here today sent five people to jail in a case lodged over allegations of swindling large sums of money from kidney patients by luring them with the promise of advanced treatment in Turkey. The five accused are– Nuruzzaman Raju, Mohammad Tarikul, Salman Farsi, Masum Billah, and Walid Miah.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to keep them behind bars till the completion of the probe. A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the five men from the capital on March 12.
The case documents reveal that over a hundred Bangladeshi citizens fell victim to fraud worth crores of Taka while seeking kidney transplants in Turkey through a fake website operated by a former employee of a Turkish hospital. In February, a victim named Nirab Nazrul Likhan entered into a US$23,000 contract with Nuruzzaman Raju for his mother’s kidney transplant. After traveling to Turkey with his mother, they were gradually swindled of nearly Taka 50 lakh, but the transplant was never performed, and they were sent back home.
Losing a substantial amount of money without receiving treatment, Nirab Nazrul Likhan filed the case at Shyampur Police Station in Dhaka on March 10.
