Rajshahi: For the first time in the hospital's history, a knee-replacement surgery has been performed at Rajshahi Medical College (RMCH) today. The surgery was performed on the leg of a 60-year-old elderly woman named Bibijan.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation was carried out in the hospital's orthopedics operation theatre from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Doctors stated that this successful surgery is a significant achievement for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. The patient, Bibijan, a resident of Chapainawabganj, had been suffering from severe osteoarthritis, which caused intense pain and restricted movement in her knee.
The medical team, led by Professor Dr. Alamgir Hossain, included Associate Professors Dr. Monowar Tarik Sabu, Dr. Shafiqul Islam, Dr. Sayed Ahmed, Dr. Matiul Islam, Dr. Saleheen, and several other doctors. Dr. Monowar Tarik Sabu explained that during the procedure, precise cuts were made to the bones above and below the knee, and a high-quality artificial knee made of metal was fitted. This state-of-the-art knee, costing approximately 1 lakh 40 thousand taka, was successfully implanted in Bibijan's leg.
Professor Dr. Alamgir Hossain expressed optimism about the patient's recovery, stating that the surgery would restore normal function to her knee, allowing her to engage in daily activities. He also announced plans to perform this surgery on at least one patient every week, which will provide significant benefits to the people of North Bengal by eliminating the need to travel to Dhaka or abroad for such procedures.
