Chattogram:The construction of the first cable-stayed bridge over the Karnaphuli River is set to address travel difficulties faced for over four decades by residents of Chattogram, Rangamati, and Bandarban. This significant infrastructure project aims to replace the unreliable ferry service currently in use, enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Roads and Highways Department has initiated a Taka 1,650 crore project to construct the architecturally distinct cable-stayed bridge. This bridge will be located at the Chandraghona-Raikhali Ferry Ghat point under Rangunia upazila, serving as a crucial link between Kaptai in Rangamati district and Rangunia in Chattogram district. The bridge will use advanced technology and feature a design where the deck is supported by steel cables connected to towering pylons.
The 532-meter-long, four-lane bridge will include a 455-meter viaduct and an elevated road spanning over 1,250 meters. It will be equipped with a modern "Bridge Smart Health Monitoring System" to ensure structural integrity and durability. An automated toll plaza will also be implemented. The bridge eliminates the need for mid-river pillars, allowing for unimpeded river flow and watercraft movement.
The ongoing ferry service at Chandraghona, known for its operational challenges, will be replaced by the bridge. The service, established in 1989, has been a major source of distress due to frequent halts from pontoon malfunctions and strong currents. Executive Engineer Sabuj Chakma stated that the bridge's design finalization and Detailed Project Proposal submission are complete, with revisions pending before Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approval.
Local residents and businesses anticipate that the bridge will alleviate long-standing transportation hardships, boosting tourism and commerce. The bridge is expected to be operational by 2031, providing a much-needed solution to the current ferry system that accommodates only a limited number of vehicles and poses risks during adverse conditions.
