Rangpur: People from all walks of life in Rangpur division are eagerly waiting to cast their votes tomorrow as authorities have completed preparations to hold the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections in a free, fair, impartial, transparent, and peaceful manner.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, for the first time in the last 17 years, a festive atmosphere reminiscent of Eid-ul-Fitr has gripped the division, amid tightened security. Thousands of local voters working in the capital or other areas have returned home to participate in the electoral process. In the past 24 hours, hundreds of passenger buses have ferried voters from Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, and other regions to districts such as Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur, and others in the division.
Officials at the Rangpur Regional Election Office confirmed that Returning Officers, who are also the Deputy Commissioners of respective districts, have completed the deployment of election materials and law enforcement agencies to all polling centers. Election monitoring committees, law and order control cells, and vigilance teams have been formed to ensure a peaceful election process.
The police administration has implemented a six-tier security plan to prevent any disruptions in the 33 constituencies of Rangpur division during the 13th JS Election and Referendum, 2026. A total of 4,546 polling centers have been prepared to accommodate 1 crore 34 lakh 54 thousand 456 voters. Of these centers, 2,561 have been identified as risky, including 827 as highly risky, particularly in char and isolated areas.
Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Aminul Islam assured journalists of a foolproof security plan, involving an adequate number of law enforcement personnel, including police, Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Ansar-VDP. In addition, police officers will be equipped with body-worn cameras for live monitoring.
Rangpur Regional Election Officer Md Dewar Hossain stated that 237 candidates from various political and independent backgrounds are competing in the 33 parliamentary constituencies. The election materials, including transparent ballot boxes, have been dispatched to all polling centers.
Rangpur District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan mentioned that the district has a total voter count of 25,99,202, with voting to take place in 4,988 booths across 873 polling centers. Enhanced security measures, including CCTV installations, have been implemented in the 216 risky polling centers identified within the district.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali announced the deployment of separate security arrangements for the 121 risky polling centers within the metropolis, supported by 30 mobile patrol teams and 78 striking reserve forces.
The Bangladesh Army’s 66th Infantry Division Commando Group is on standby to manage any volatile situations, while 3,000 BGB members have been deployed in four districts to maintain peace. BGB’s Rangpur Sector Commander Colonel SM Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the deployment of 74 platoons across 26 base camps to ensure flawless security, with special attention to maintaining peace in the risky polling centers.
