Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today warned that fascist forces are scheming to re-enter politics, taking advantage of any potential governmental missteps. He emphasized the significance of remaining vigilant to prevent any rise in fascism and extremism during a virtual address at a public meeting.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was organized by Dhaka District BNP to honor the families of students, workers, and the public who became martyrs during the July mass uprising. The event took place at the Darul Ihsan ground in Sreepur Gonakbari, Ashulia, Savar, and was chaired by Dhaka District BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the main speaker.
Tarique Rahman highlighted the historical movement over the past one and a half decades, emphasizing the July mass uprising that allegedly forced ‘dictator’ Sheikh Hasina to flee. He attributed a significant number of martyrs in this movement to the Savar-Ashulia area, particularly from the working class, and drew parallels to historical atrocities.
He questioned the involvement of working-class individuals in the quota reform movement, suggesting that their participation was driven by a fear of losing rights and national sovereignty under fascist rule. Rahman reiterated the importance of elections as a means for citizens to exercise political power.
The event also saw BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, presenting honors to the families of the martyrs. Relatives of the martyrs, such as Shaheed Sajjad Hossain Sajal’s mother Shahima Begum and Shaheed Mamun Biplob’s wife Sathi Khan, shared their grief and highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by many martyr families.
