Chattogram: Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk-e-Azam Bir Pratik has urged for international involvement to find a sustainable solution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis. He emphasized that the issue transcends Bangladesh and requires the participation of global and regional stakeholders to reach a resolution.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Faruk-e-Azam made these remarks while addressing a meeting titled ‘Rohingya crisis in the eyes of Chattogram: Humanity, security and future’ organized by Chattogram Forum at the July Biplob Smriti Hall at Chattogram Press Club. He highlighted the political nature of the crisis and stressed the need for a political approach to achieve a lasting solution.
The adviser noted the complexity of the crisis, pointing out how it involves Myanmar directly and affects neighboring countries. He also mentioned the emergence of an armed group that has further complicated the situation. Faruk-e-Azam criticized the previous government’s inability to address the issue due to their weak political standing.
He remarked on the current political transition in Bangladesh and the importance of strengthening political positions to address the crisis effectively. Faruk-e-Azam also discussed the potential political gains from a united national election, suggesting it would enhance Bangladesh’s ability to negotiate solutions for the Rohingya crisis and other issues.
Faruk-e-Azam revealed plans to allow the Commonwealth Journalists Association to hold a conference on the Rohingya issue and welcomed journalists to visit the refugee camps, asserting transparency on the matter. He also expressed concerns over local law and order, particularly regarding the involvement of Rohingya refugees in drug trafficking, while acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating the problem.
He further emphasized the government’s responsibility to create a humane environment in Rohingya refugee camps, ensuring healthcare and education despite limited resources. The meeting was presided over by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation General Secretary Advocate Zia Habib Ahsan and moderated by Chattogram Metropolitan Union General Secretary Saleh Noman. Special guest Additional Secretary of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner’s Office Abu Saleh Mohammed Obaidullah, among others, also addressed the gathering.
