Dhaka: Adviser to the Ministries of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Sharmeen S Murshid has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. In a condolence message today, the adviser stated that the nation has lost an important political guardian, expressing her deep sadness and shock at Khaleda Zia’s demise.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sharmeen S Murshid emphasized that Begum Khaleda Zia was more than a political party leader; she represented a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s history. Recognizing her contributions, long political struggle, and the emotional attachment of the people to her, the government recently declared her a “Very Important Person” of the state.
Sharmeen S Murshid highlighted that many of Khaleda Zia’s initiatives and decisions significantly advanced the nation. Notably, she introduced free education and stipends for girls, marking a milestone in the progress of women’s education in Bangladesh.
The adviser noted that Khaleda Zia’s efforts in the struggle for democracy, fostering a multi-party political culture, and establishing people’s rights in Bangladesh would remain unforgettable. Her uncompromising leadership repeatedly liberated the nation from undemocratic situations, and her contributions will always be remembered with respect.
Despite political differences, Sharmeen Murshid acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s long political journey aimed at national welfare, her people-oriented leadership, and firm resolve, which consistently provided guidance. She noted that Khaleda Zia was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh who led the fight to restore the democratic process against autocratic rule.
The adviser also extended her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members, leaders, and activists of Khaleda Zia’s party.
