Farida Advocates for Halting Tobacco Cultivation to Protect Halda River

Chattogram: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar has called for the revision of gazetted rules to facilitate the protection of the Halda River’s natural fish breeding grounds. Speaking as the chief guest at the 15th meeting of the Fisheries Heritage Implementation Supervision Committee, held at the Circuit House conference room, she emphasized that amendments are necessary to halt tobacco cultivation along the riverbank and address river pollution.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser stressed the importance of long-term measures and coordinated efforts among relevant departments for successful project implementation. She highlighted the need for proper planning, effective implementation, and supervision to achieve the project’s objectives and ensure the conservation and development of the Halda River.



Farida Akhtar urged the Ministry of Agriculture to collaborate on providing alternative livelihood options for farmers affected by the cessation of tobacco cultivation along the river. She also called for a comprehensive review to identify policy-level obstacles in protecting the river. The interim government remains committed to the conservation efforts for the Halda River.



During the meeting, Project Director Mohammad Nazim Uddin detailed the objectives and progress of the ‘Halda River Natural Fish Breeding Area Development and Management Project (Phase II)’. Dr. Md. Manjurul Kibria, coordinator of the Halda River Research Laboratory, shared insights on challenges, opportunities, and solutions for the upcoming project phase.



Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin chaired the meeting, with Chattogram City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain and Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman acting as special guests. Also present were Additional Divisional Commissioner Nusrat Sultana, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Saiful Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachari A.B. M. Iftekharul Islam, and other notable officials.
