Thakurgaon: LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called upon journalists to remain united to protect their rights and ensure media freedom. “Responsible and objective journalism can play an important role for the welfare of the country and the nation,” he told a views-exchange meeting with journalists at Mirza Ruhul Amin Auditorium here today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul, who is also the BNP Secretary General, emphasized that journalism is a challenging profession and should not be belittled. He highlighted the significant role journalists play in shaping society and the state, cautioning that irresponsible journalism could be detrimental to the country and the nation.
Fakhrul advised journalists to consider the statements of all parties involved before publishing news. He noted that a lack of unity among journalists has resulted in many not receiving fair salaries as per the wage board award.
He urged journalists to seek unity over division, especially in light of the new opportunities presented by the July mass uprising, which he believes should be utilized for the benefit of the country and its people. Fakhrul also described the Family Card programme as a groundbreaking initiative that he hopes will empower women.
The meeting was attended by District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali, Municipal BNP President Shariful Islam Sharif, Sadar Upazila BNP President Abdul Hamid, Acting President of Thakurgaon Press Club Lutfor Rahman Mithu, and journalists from various print, electronic, and online media outlets of the district.
