Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tributes to BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on his 44th martyrdom anniversary. In a message, Fakhrul highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to Bangladesh’s independence and democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul described Ziaur Rahman as the declarer of the Great Independence and the architect of modern Bangladesh. He emphasized Ziaur Rahman’s role in re-establishing multi-party democracy and promoting the philosophy of ‘Bangladeshi Nationalism’. Fakhrul reflected on Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence in 1971 and his efforts in nation-building.
Fakhrul recounted how Ziaur Rahman inspired the nation during the Liberation War with his proclamation of independence from Kalurghat radio station. He mentioned the subsequent participation of various segments of society in the liberation efforts and the eventual victory over invaders.
Post-independence, Fakhrul stated that the nation suffered under undemocratic rule, and citizens’ rights were suppressed. He credited Ziaur Rahman for restoring multi-party democracy and civil liberties, and for transforming Bangladesh’s economy from a struggling state to a food-exporting nation.
Fakhrul noted that Ziaur Rahman faced conspiracies from anti-state elements, culminating in his assassination on May 30, 1981, in Chittagong. Despite this, Fakhrul argued, Ziaur Rahman remains alive in the hearts of the people and his ideals endure.
He criticized the Awami League regime for holding on to power through fear and repression and mentioned the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s regime last year as a significant pro-democracy movement.
Fakhrul called for an environment that supports free elections, accountability, and civil rights, emphasizing the need to uphold Ziaur Rahman’s ideals in nation-building efforts. He urged wide participation in observing Ziaur Rahman’s martyrdom anniversary with dignity.
