Fakhrul off to Singapore for treatment

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir went to Singapore early Friday for medical treatment.

Fakhrul and his wife Rahat Ara Begum left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Singapore on a flight of Thai Airways around 1:30am, BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan told UNB.

Sayrul said Fakhrul and his wife will receive treatment at two separate hospitals in Singapore for their health complexities.

Talking to UNB before boarding the flight, Fakhrul said he will undergo treatment at Singapore National University Hospital. "This is my follow-up health checkup."

He said his wife is also sick and she will receive treatment at another hospital.

The BNP secretary general urged the party leaders and workers as well as countrymen to pray for his speedy recovery.

Fakhrul said he will return to the country after a week.

The 76-year-old BNP leader received treatment in Singapore last time on January 30, 2021.

In 2015, while incarcerated, Fakhrul was diagnosed with a block in the internal carotid artery of his neck.

After his release, he went to Singapore for treatment. After that, he has to go to Singapore every year for follow-up treatment.

The BNP leader could not go to Singapore last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On December 8 last, Fakhrul was arrested by the police from his Uttara residence just two days before BNP's much-talked-about rally in the capital.

Just after a month, he was released from jail on bail by the High Court.

Later, he was admitted to Evercare Hospital on January 15 for treatment.
