Experts Stress Conserving Fisheries Resources

Rangpur: Experts and officials today emphasized increasing public awareness to conserve the country’s fisheries resources and expand fish farming to boost production. The Department of Fisheries and district administration jointly organized the event at Shilpakala Academy auditorium to launch National Fisheries Week 2025.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal served as the chief guest at the event, which was presided over by District Fisheries Officer Md Harun-or-Rashid. Superintendent of Police Md Abu Saim and District Livestock Officer Dr Md Abu Sayeed also spoke as special guests.



During the event, Assistant Director of Rangpur District Fisheries Department Sanjay Banerjee presented a documentary outlining government steps to enhance fish production and highlighted the successes achieved so far. The deputy commissioner emphasized that fish is a major source of protein in Bengali cuisine and is crucial for family prosperity and national economic development. He noted that many farmers are adopting modern techniques to increase production and create employment opportunities for unemployed youth.



He further added that the government provides training, loans, and technical support to fish farmers. To maximize production, there was a call to bring all rivers, canals, ponds, beels, and floodplains under fish cultivation.



District Fisheries Officer Md Harun-or-Rashid stated that the nationwide Fisheries Week aims to raise awareness and boost production. He advocated for establishing cooperative organizations of real fish farmers to address challenges within the sector.



Earlier, a colorful rally commenced from the District Collectorate, circled the main roads, and concluded at Shilpakala Academy following the release of fish fry in the Rangpur Cricket Garden pond. The event concluded with the awarding of three successful fish farmers.
