Sirajganj: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has submitted a charge sheet against 16 individuals, comprising leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and its student organization, for their involvement in the murder of Enamul Haque Bijoy, a leader from the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the charge sheet includes former lawmaker Dr. Habib-e-Millat from the Sirajganj-2 constituency, along with Helal Uddin, the president of Sirajganj Poura AL, and several BCL leaders such as Ahsan Habib Khoka and Shihab Ahmed Jihad. Additional accused include Juba League leader Emdadul Haque Emdad and BCL members Ashiqur Rahman Bijoy, Al Amin, Zahidul Islam, and others. Of the charged individuals, four are currently on bail, while the remaining 12 have been absconding for a significant time. The General Recording Officer (GRO) of Sirajganj Sadar Court, Juwel Rana, noted that the charge sheet will be presented before the court for a hearing on December 14.
Enamul Haque Bijoy, who held the position of president at the BCL Haji Korop Ali Government College unit in Kamarkhand upazila, was attacked on June 16, 2020. As per the police, Bijoy was on his way to attend a memorial meeting for former Health Minister Mohammad Nasim when he was ambushed by a group of BCL leaders. The assailants, acting on instructions from Millat and Helal Uddin, brutally attacked him at Station Bazar. Despite being rushed to Sirajganj General Hospital and later transferred to the Neuroscience Hospital in Dhaka, Bijoy succumbed to his injuries on July 5, 2020.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Sirajganj police had previously submitted a charge sheet in April 2021, implicating 12 people. However, family members of the deceased filed a non-acceptance petition, prompting a court order on November 3, 2022, for the CID police to reinvestigate the case.
