Dhaka: A court here today placed former Member of Parliament (MP) from Dhaka-20 constituency, MA Maleque, on a four-day remand in a case lodged over the murder of Riajul Islam in the Ashulia area during the anti-discrimination student movement. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohagh passed the order as police produced him before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Maleque was arrested from the capital's Mirpur area on the night of March 5. The murder case relates to the death of Riajul Islam, 38, who joined the anti-discrimination rally on Nabinagar-Chandra Highway under Ashulia Police Station on August 5. During the rally, Islam was shot and subsequently rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The case regarding Islam's murder was filed on November 24, leading to the arrest and subsequent remand of MA Maleque as part of the ongoing investigation.
