Dhaka: A court in Dhaka has placed former food minister Adv Qamrul Islam on a four-day remand in connection with two separate extortion cases filed at the Kamrangirchar Police Station. The decision follows a hearing where police requested a 10-day remand for each case, while the defense sought bail for the ex-minister.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain issued the remand order after evaluating arguments from both sides. The court ultimately decided on a two-day remand for each of the cases. Adv Qamrul Islam was apprehended on November 18, 2024, from a residence in the Uttara-12 area of the capital.
The first case was filed by Sagir Ahmed Sujon against 14 individuals, including Qamrul Islam. The complaint alleges that the accused demanded Taka one crore in extortion. Despite paying Taka 20 lakh, Sujon claims that on September 24, 2023, his house was vandalized and looted by the accused. The legal complaint was officially lodged on September 4, 2024.
In a separate incident, Ali Ahammed filed the second case against 11 individuals, including Adv Qamrul Islam, for allegedly demanding Taka 20 lakh in 2020. Ahammed reports that when he refused to pay, the accused threatened him at gunpoint and physically assaulted him. This complaint was filed on September 7, 2024.
