Dhaka:Detectives from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, a former lawmaker and leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from his Cantonment residence on Friday evening.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrest followed a case filed against Akhtaruzzaman at Airport Police Station on Friday. The charges include obstructing government duties, creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and physically assaulting a security official.

The incident occurred Thursday morning when passengers arriving on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Madina faced a shortage of trolleys and baggage collection delays amid heavy passenger pressure. As tensions escalated, Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad attempted to manage the situation, following a request from Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain.

The First Information Report alleges that Akhtaruzzaman aggressively confronted Ragib Samad, verbally abused him, and threatened to physically remove him from the airport. He also reportedly made offensive remarks about the Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister.

Further allegations include Akhtaruzzaman's protocol assistants recording videos within the airport's restricted area and his subsequent verbal and physical assault on Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin. Akhtaruzzaman is also accused of damaging property, such as throwing bottles of holy Zamzam water, and exhibiting aggressive behavior towards a Biman Bangladesh Airlines representative.

Police have stated they will collect CCTV footage, eyewitness statements, and other evidence as part of their investigation and will take legal action based on their findings.
