KHULNA: A Khulna court has placed former Land Minister and former lawmaker Naryan Chandra Chanda on a one-day remand in connection with a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The court's decision follows a police request to place Chanda on a five-day remand. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Judge Rakibul Islam of the Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 issued the remand order as Chanda was produced before the court. Advocate Mominul Islam, representing the plaintiff and serving as the Khulna divisional coordinator of the Bangladesh Human Rights Implementation Association, confirmed the court's decision. The case was initiated by Golam Rasul, a cousin of the victim, who filed a petition with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3. The petition accuses Naryan Chandra Chanda and others, including former Dumuria Upazila Chairman Gazi Ezaz Ahmad, of involvement in crimes against the victim. The plaintiff alleges that Ezaz raped the victim on multiple occ asions under the pretense of marriage. The victim was admitted to the One Stop Crisis Center at Khulna Medical College Hospital on January 27. The following day, she was reportedly kidnapped by armed men acting on Chanda's directives. The court subsequently directed the Officer-in-Charge of Sonadanga Police to investigate and file a case, which was done on October 17. Naryan Chandra Chanda was previously arrested on October 6 in Jhenaidah while allegedly attempting to cross the border into India illegally.
