Dhaka: A court here today placed former director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a one-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of BNP activist Makbul in 2022. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order as police produced the accused before the court after the end of his three-day remand in the case and pleaded to place him on a one-day fresh remand.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Zunayed had earlier placed Sheikh Mamun Khaled on a three-day remand on April 9. A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Khaled from his Mirpur DOHS residence on the night of March 25.

The case documents reveal that BNP leaders and activists, as part of their party program on December 10, 2022, began gathering in the capital. Marking the program, police and Awami League men created a ruckus in front of the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan on December 7. They entered the BNP office, charged batons, and opened fire at the BNP men, injuring Makbul critically.

Makbul later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The case was subsequently filed on September 30, 2024.
