Dhaka: A court here today placed former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque on a seven-day remand in a case filed over manipulating the Supreme Court verdict on the caretaker government system. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah passed the order as police produced Khairul before the court with a 10-day remand prayer in the case, sub-inspector Md Zinnat told BSS.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station under Sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code. Section 219 states that a public servant who corruptly or maliciously makes or pronounces any report, order, verdict, or decision in a judicial proceeding that he knows to be contrary to law shall be punished with imprisonment for a term that may extend to seven years, or with a fine, or both.
Section 466 addresses the forging of documents related to court proceedings or official records, stipulating that anyone who forges such a document shall be punished with imprisonment for a term that may extend to seven years and shall also be liable to a fine.
On July 24, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Khairul from his residence in the Dhanmondi area. On the same day, Khairul was sent to jail in connection with a separate case filed over the killing of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, 16, in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on July 18 last year.
