European Football Season 2021-2022: Winners and Losers From Big Three leagues

The Champions League final match between Real Madrid and Liverpool on Saturday (May 28) will bring the European football season 2021–2022 to an end. The champions of each league are already known because the domestic season has already ended. Football fans all around the world are generally more interested in Europe’s biggest leagues, which include the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. Let’s see who had the greatest season in 2021–2022 and who were demoted to the first division.

English Premier League Season 2021-2022 Review

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City secured the 2021–2022 Premier League title on the final day of the season thanks to a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa. It was a dramatic match as City were 2-0 down at 69 minutes but made a mesmerizing comeback after that. They scored 3 goals in 5 minutes and secured their 4th league title in 5 years. Overall, Man City finished the season with 93 points. Liverpool were the only team to give Man City a hard run in the league. However, they eventually came one point short and ended the season with 92 points.

Had Liverpool won the Premier League, they would have had a chance to win a quadruple this season. They already clinched the EFL Cup and FA Cup by beating Chelsea in a penalty shootout in both tournaments’ finals. Liverpool can still win the treble if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Chelsea and Tottenham finished third and fourth, respectively, confirming their participation in the Champions League next season. Arsenal and Manchester United qualified for the Europa League by finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Besides, West Ham United will play in the UEFA Conference League next season as they finished seventh in the points table.

Among the bottom teams, Leeds United and Burnley fought to avoid relegation on the final matchday of the season. Leeds eventually avoided relegation by beating Brentford 2-1, while Burnley were relegated to the EFL Championship after losing to Newcastle United 2-1 at home.

2021-2022 Spanish La Liga Review

Atletico Madrid were favourites to win the La Liga title at the start of the season. However, their performances weren’t up to the mark and they finished the season third with 71 points. Real Madrid were crowned champions in the 2021–2022 La Liga season as they were more consistent than other teams. They earned 86 points in total, 13 points more than second-placed FC Barcelona. Sevilla finished fourth in the points table with 70 points. The top four teams have qualified for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Real Betis and Real Sociedad secured Europa League spots by finishing in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Besides, Villarreal finished seventh with 59 points and they will play in the UEFA Conference League next season. Meanwhile, Granada, Levante, and Alaves were all relegated to the Segunda Division.

Real Betis won the Copa del Rey this season, their third title overall and the first time in 17 years. Real Madrid have a chance to win their 14th Champions League trophy if they beat Liverpool in the final on Saturday (May 28).

Italian Serie A 2021-2022 Review

AC Milan won their 19th league title this season, and their first in 11 years, with a 3-0 victory over Sassuolo on the final day. Inter Milan fought hard throughout the season but had to finish second with 84 points. However, they did manage to win the Coppa Italia 2022 after securing a 4-0 victory over Juventus in the final. Oppositely, Juventus finished fourth in Serie A with 70 points and secured a Champions League spot next season along with AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Napoli, who finished third in the league.

Lazio and Roma finished fifth and sixth, respectively, and will play in the Europa League next season. While Fiorentina secured a UEFA Conference League spot by finishing seventh in the league. Meanwhile, Cagliari, Genoa, and Venezia are all the bottom three clubs in the points table, and they have dropped to Serie B.

Review of other Major European leagues

Among the other notable European leagues, Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga in Germany, Paris Saint-Germain won Ligue 1 in France, Ajax won the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, and Porto won the Primeira Liga in Portugal.

The English Premier League is often considered to be the most difficult in Europe. Manchester City and Liverpool were the main championship challengers in the Championship, and they battled until the last day of the season.
