EU contributes to Bangladesh’s progress: Tofail

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2017 (BSS) - Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said duty and quota free market access being provided by European Union (EU) under everything but arms (EBA) facilities is rendering positive contribution to employment and socioeconomic development of Bangladesh.

"Export of RMG along with other products is being increased day by day which has also generated employment opportunities especially for women due to the facilities," he added.

The minister was addressing as chief guest at the opening session of a day-long workshop titled "The Mid-Term Evaluation of EU's GSP" organized by EU Trade Division in a city hotel.

He said number of poor people in Bangladesh is decreasing rapidly simultaneously with the noteworthy progress of socioeconomic scenario. "The EU has contributed a lot and Bangladesh remembers it with gratefulness."

Export Promotion Bureau made a presentation on "EBA: Bangladesh Perspective" while the EU on "Evaluation Process and Objectives" in the workshop.

Senior Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, EU Ambassador Pierre Mayardon, EU Trade Affairs Director General Diniel Kramer, EU GSP Evaluation Team Head William Vander Geest and EPB Vice Chairman Mafruha Sultana, among others, spoke on the occasion.
