Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the principal challenges for the forthcoming government include revitalizing the economy, maintaining law and order, curbing corruption, and establishing justice. He emphasized these points while addressing journalists outside the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this afternoon, upon his return to Dhaka from his constituency in Thakurgaon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul announced that in the 13th parliamentary elections, the BNP secured a majority by winning 209 out of 299 seats. With this majority, the BNP plans to form the next government under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul expressed mixed emotions about the election results, noting the absence of the party’s late Chairperson and Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia, who he wished could have witnessed their victory.

Reflecting on the election process, Fakhrul described it as a remarkable and transparent event following a mass uprising of students and the public. He conveyed his personal satisfaction and optimism for maintaining the continuity of democracy if such momentum persists.

In response to a query about the Awami League, which abstained from participating in the election, Fakhrul mentioned that the Election Commission has already prohibited their activities. He indicated that future decisions concerning the Awami League will depend on evolving political contexts.

After leaving the airport, Fakhrul proceeded to the party chairman’s office in Gulshan, where he congratulated Chairman Tarique Rahman by presenting him with flowers. The event was also attended by members of the party’s Standing Committee, including Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed, as well as Adviser to the Chairman’s Council Ismail Zabihullah.
