DHAKA: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines are set to be developed to tackle the pressing issue of plastic pollution, as announced by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser. The guidelines will ensure that producers remain responsible for their products throughout their entire life cycles, thereby promoting sustainable practices.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana Hasan emphasized the potential for these guidelines to enhance opportunities for the reuse, recycling, and safe management of plastic waste. She made these remarks during a meeting focused on formulating EPR guidelines at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The initiative is expected to foster collective efforts among stakeholders to effectively prevent plastic pollution, aiding Bangladesh in its pursuit of environmentally friendly development.
Rizwana stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the detrimental effects of polythene and micro-plastics. She urged for a shift in public mindset and advocated for collaborative efforts to address the plastic problem. The meeting was attended by key officials from the ministry, including the Secretary and Additional Secretaries, as well as representatives from non-governmental organizations, signifying a united approach to combating plastic pollution.
