Election Board Chair Nasreen Fatema Awal said the board successfully completed the election process for the 2025-2027 term with the cooperation of all. She expressed confidence that the new committee would play a significant role in resolving existing challenges in the jewellery sector and thus help promote Bangladeshi products to international markets.
Newly elected Vice President Md. Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury noted that the jewellery industry is part of the country’s heritage and has become a vital contributor to the national economy. Around 40,000 jewellery enterprises and 1 to 1.2 million artisans are currently engaged in this sector. Annual gold demand in Bangladesh is estimated at 30 to 40 tons according to official data, and 70 to 90 tons according to private estimates, most of which comes from recycled gold.
He added that Bangladesh’s jewellery market is valued at around Taka 4 lakh crore for gold and Taka 30,000 crore for diamonds. Despite its size, high import duties, complex procedures, and lack of modern manufacturing infrastructure have limited revenue generation from the sector. Import duties on raw materials and machinery, ranging from 30% to 60%, continue to drive up production costs and slow down the establishment of modern factories.
According to the election results announced by the BAJUS Election Board, the newly elected Executive Committee (2025-2027) comprises Enamul Haque Khan as President, Ranjit Ghosh as Senior Vice President, and Azad Ahmed, Abhi Roy, and Md. Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury as Vice Presidents. Amit Ghosh has been elected as Treasurer. The 29 elected directors include Md. Milon Mia, Paban Kumar Agarwal, Tanvir Rahman, and several others.
