Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated today that the decision to adopt the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system or retain the current method should be determined by the political parties themselves. “The government should preferably speak less on the matter of the electoral system,” Alam remarked during the presentation of survey results conducted by the research organization ‘Innovation’ at the Daily Star conference room in the city.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam addressed the findings of the electoral survey, emphasizing that the statistics reveal public trust in the government. He underscored the high level of public intent to participate in the elections, noting that 95 percent of people express a desire to vote, indicating that the forthcoming election is poised to be an inclusive one. Alam asserted that if voter turnout is high, the electoral process is “bound to be good.”

The survey, released by Innovation on the same day regarding the upcoming election, included responses from 10,413 participants. According to the survey, a significant majority, 69.9 percent, believe that an interim government would be capable of organizing a neutral election. However, approximately 56 percent of the population remains unaware of the PR system. Among those surveyed, opinions on the PR method were closely divided, with 21.8 percent in favor of it and 22.2 percent opposed.
