Dhaka: Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen today asserted that electing individuals involved in corruption, extortion, and terrorism will not contribute to reducing corruption. He made these remarks while presiding over a discussion session organized by the ACC at the National Theatre Hall Auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day 2025.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest, with Dr A K Enamul Haque, Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, serving as a special guest. Dr Momen highlighted that political elites have facilitated the safe passage of corrupt individuals across borders for the past 15 years, emphasizing the need for vigilance before such individuals assume power.

He referenced former ousted Premier Sheikh Hasina, noting that her 2008 asset declaration showed 5.1 acres of land, matching her tax file. However, subsequent investigations revealed 29 acres. Dr Momen stressed that if this discrepancy had been identified earlier, it could have impacted her political career significantly.

Dr Momen discussed the corruption observed during the 15 years of the Awami League government, pointing out frequent discrepancies in asset declarations. He recounted the events leading up to the Prime Minister’s flight from the country, noting the departure of key financial and judicial figures as a significant example of corruption.

He elaborated on the challenges of recovering money once it is transferred abroad, citing weak international relations as a barrier. Dr Momen also addressed the evolving nature of corruption, mentioning the laundering of money through cryptocurrency and the lack of current training to combat it. He concluded by emphasizing the need for the ACC to strengthen its capabilities and collaborate with other entities to address these challenges effectively.
