Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam stated that an elected parliament will tackle the nation's pressing issues. Speaking at a discussion titled 'National Parliamentary Election 2026: The Necessity of National Unity' at a hotel in Gulshan, he emphasized the role of parliament in solving unresolved national problems through dialogue.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the growing importance of democratic practices, asserting that true democracy would emerge from such discussions. He reflected on the historical context, noting that since the era of Pakistan, democracy has faced challenges. However, he expressed optimism, crediting the July warriors for creating an opportunity to institutionalize democracy.
Fakhrul affirmed the BNP's commitment to forming an elected government through elections, suggesting that the country's situation would improve with the establishment of such a government. He dismissed any reason for despair in the current political climate.
Regarding the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the upcoming elections, Fakhrul remarked that it remains unfamiliar to the populace. He reiterated the BNP's desire for anti-fascist political parties to unite and form a national government, emphasizing that elections are the sole pathway to achieving this goal.
Other notable speakers at the event included poet and political thinker Farhad Mazhar, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon Bangladesh Zonayed Saki, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, and Senior Joint Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Samantha Sharmin.
