Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan emphasized the need for the educated population to become productive. He stated that a practical plan for productive employment is essential for the country’s development, involving the educated population in this process. Dr. Moyeen announced BNP’s action plan to employ ten million youths by providing them with technical and vocational education.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Moyeen delivered his remarks at a seminar titled “Socio-Economic Development in Bangladesh Through TVET: Problems and Prospects” held at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council auditorium. The seminar was organized by the Education Reform Initiative (ERI), where the keynote was presented by ERI President and former State Minister of Education Dr. A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milan.
Dr. Moyeen highlighted the demographic advantage of Bangladesh, with 52 percent of its population being youth, and stressed the importance of transforming this segment into a productive human resource. He referred to the initiative as part of transforming the ‘youth’s hand into a worker’s hand,’ echoing the vision of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
The keynote paper presented at the event pointed out the employment challenges faced by the youth in Bangladesh. It noted that 20 percent of the youth are university graduates, but only 16.8 percent have found employment. A UGC survey from 2024 revealed that despite one million youth entering the job market annually, less than half secure jobs. Additionally, BMET statistics from 2024 indicated that although one million youth go abroad for work each year, many are unskilled, resulting in lower wages and engagement in low-quality jobs. The paper emphasized that comprehensive development requires a skilled populace.
The seminar featured several notable figures, including Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Textile University Dr. Julhas Uddin, Adviser to the BNP Chairperson Dr. S M Ziauddin Haider, Chairman of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board Engineer Md. Ruhul Amin, Organizing Secretary of the BNP’s Cumilla region and Chairman of the Teachers-Employees Unity Alliance Principal Md. Selim Bhuiyan, and Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought Dr. Muhammad Abdul Aziz, as special guests.
