Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today announced that all economic indicators, including exports, foreign investment, and reserves, have returned to a positive trajectory after the July Uprising. "After assuming the office following the uprising, rescuing the economy from a deep crisis was one of our greatest challenges. Over the past 15 months, we have successfully overcome that challenge," he stated in a televised address to the nation this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser highlighted that the plundered banking sector has already recovered, and public confidence has been restored. He mentioned that several initiatives are now underway to further strengthen the banking sector.
Professor Yunus also pointed out the significant increase in foreign direct investment (FDI), noting that while many countries experienced a decline in foreign investment in the post-uprising period, Bangladesh saw a 19.13 percent rise in FDI in the first year following the mass uprising. This remarkable achievement sets a unique economic example against the global trend.
The government is poised to sign a 30-year concession agreement with APM Terminals BV, a subsidiary of the Denmark-based Maersk Group, for the Laldia Container Terminal project next week. Under this agreement, the European company will invest US$550 million, marking the largest-ever single European investment in Bangladesh to date. Professor Yunus remarked that once completed, Laldia will be the country's first world-class green port.
