Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to uphold the candidacy of BNP nominee Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad for the Cumilla-3 constituency. This decision comes after a formal appeal questioning the legality of his nomination was rejected.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the appeal was initiated by Jamaat-e-Islami candidate M Yousuf Sohel, who claimed that Kaikobad possessed dual citizenship, a factor that could potentially invalidate his candidacy. Despite the completion of the hearing on this matter at the EC on Sunday, the final decision was announced on Monday. The commission rejected the appeal, thereby maintaining Kaikobad’s candidacy for the upcoming election.

The EC’s decision marks a significant point in the electoral process for Cumilla-3, as it eliminates legal uncertainties surrounding the BNP nominee’s eligibility. This development ensures that Kaikobad remains in the race for the constituency seat.
