Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today expressed confidence that the Election Commission (EC) will conduct a successful election, with the government providing full support to ensure this outcome. “We hope that the Election Commission will present the nation a good election. We will extend every possible cooperation to the Election Commission in doing so,” he remarked following the 10th advisory council meeting on law and order at the Home Ministry conference room.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser assured that the law and order situation would be improved during the upcoming general election. He stated that discussions were held on how to ensure a better law and order environment during the national election. The chiefs of all law enforcement agencies have committed to maintaining order during the election period.

The Home Adviser emphasized that maintaining a good law and order situation during the election is a shared responsibility. While law enforcement agencies play a crucial role, aspirant candidates, returning officers, polling officers, and the Election Commission also significantly impact the process. He reiterated that all law enforcement agencies operate under the Election Commission during the elections and called upon everyone to remain vigilant to ensure a smooth electoral process.

Addressing concerns about mob violence, Jahangir responded to questions regarding an incident involving former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda during his arrest. He condemned the violence, stating, “No one expected such incident. So, we are sorry. We will take tougher action to stop recurrence of such incident.” He confirmed that one individual involved in the mob violence had been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining culprits. Legal action will also be pursued if any police officials are found complicit.

He further addressed the issue of mob violence, acknowledging that while it has not been entirely eradicated, it has significantly reduced due to government measures. Commenting on the police’s role, Jahangir noted that the police have become more proactive and their mental resilience has improved. “Police is not inactive. They have become more humane and are trying to settle any problem through dialogue rather than enforcing power,” he concluded.
