Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has reinstated the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with its electoral symbol of the 'Scales' (Daripalla). To this end, the EC today issued a gazette notification, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the gazette outlined the history of the party's registration process. Initially, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was granted registration as a political party based on its application, as per the Representation of the People Order, 1972. This registration was issued through a gazette notification in November 2008.
The registration was later canceled following a judgment from the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court in Writ Petition No. 630 of 2009. This led to the Election Commission issuing a gazette notification in October 2018, canceling the party's registration.
The reinstatement follows a decision from the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. The court set aside the previous judgment and ordered the restoration of the party's registration. Consequently, the gazette notification that canceled the registration in 2018 has been repealed, restoring both the party's registration and its electoral symbol.
