Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin announced that the Election Commission (EC) is preparing to hold national elections in December. He stated that the election schedule would need to be released in October for the December elections to proceed as planned.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CEC made these remarks at a charge handover ceremony for the newly elected committee of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) held at the Election Training Institute auditorium. He emphasized that conducting local government elections by June is not feasible. The Reform Commission’s suggestion of June elections hinges on the exclusion of 1.6 million dead voters and new voters, which cannot be accommodated. The voter list update process is expected to conclude by June.
Addressing concerns about the law and order situation, the CEC expressed optimism that conditions would stabilize by December. He highlighted the importance of widespread cooperation to ensure that voting becomes the primary focus for the populace.
The ceremony also marked the election of Kazi Jebel as president and Golam Rabbani as general secretary of the RFED, positions they assumed on February 9.
