Dhaka: Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has announced that the university will annually observe ‘Female Student Day’ on July 14 to honor the significant role of female students during the July mass uprising. Additionally, ‘Terror Resistance Day’ will be observed on July 17 each year to commemorate the students’ courageous stand against terrorism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the VC made this announcement during the first anniversary of the July mass uprising at the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the DU campus. These two important days will be officially included in the university’s calendar, Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan confirmed.
Reflecting on the contributions of the students involved in the uprising, the VC expressed his deep respect and gratitude to those who participated from various parts of the country, including private universities, colleges, and Madrasas. He emphasized the significance of the uprising in creating new opportunities and expressed a commitment to seizing these opportunities for the betterment of the nation.
Dr Khan highlighted the opposition to terrorism demonstrated by the students, which served as an inspiring example for the entire nation. He acknowledged the determination visible in the faces of the students and hailed it as a great achievement.
In his address, the VC called on all participants of the uprising to remain connected with the DU community, emphasizing the importance of unity and collective effort in advancing the country’s progress. He reiterated the commitment to preserving the opportunity created through the sacrifices made during the uprising.
The anniversary event saw the active participation of DU female students, who commemorated the day with a procession reminiscent of the original movement. They chanted slogans and engaged in various programs to mark the occasion.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam, DU pro-VC Prof Dr Saima Huq Bidisha, DU Treasurer and Convener of the July Uprising Revival Committee Prof Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmad, among others.
