Dhaka: A court in Dhaka today sent to jail Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University (DU), in a case filed over allegations of instigating his student, Munira Mahjabin Mimo, to commit suicide. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias passed the order as police produced the accused before the court after the end of his three-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of the probe.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, earlier on May 3, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam placed Sudip on a three-day remand in the case. Police arrested Sudip Chakraborty from the city’s North Badda area on April 26. He was sent to jail the following day after being shown arrested in the case.
Munira Mahjabin Mimo was found dead in her rented flat in Badda on the morning of April 26. Her body was later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for an autopsy. According to case documents, a handwritten note was recovered from the scene, while her WhatsApp messages reportedly suggested that she had an intimate relationship with the teacher. The victim’s father has alleged that the teacher instigated her to take her own life.
