Dhaka: The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is set to roll out a 10-day ‘crash program’ beginning tomorrow, aimed at managing the escalating mosquito problem within its jurisdiction, as per a press release. DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam has declared a ‘zero tolerance’ approach towards mosquito control measures, directing all relevant officials to implement the initiative with strict adherence.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement was made during an emergency meeting at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium, attended by officials from the health department’s mosquito control wing. The special drive will mobilize city corporation officials and local residents alike to ensure its effectiveness. Abdus Salam emphasized that any negligence in mosquito control activities would be unacceptable.

The meeting underscored the importance of using effective insecticides, following proper application protocols, and enhancing field-level monitoring. The health department has been instructed to collaborate closely with the waste management department to bolster mosquito control efforts comprehensively.

Abdus Salam highlighted that any lapses or corruption in mosquito control activities would be met with stringent actions, reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance policy. He also committed to personally overseeing regular field inspections to track the program’s progress.

Discussions at the meeting also included plans to improve the skills of mosquito control workers through targeted training and to explore new, more effective insecticide alternatives. Furthermore, Abdus Salam directed the authorities to enforce strict legal measures, including mobile court operations, against organizations found to be harboring mosquito breeding sites and ignoring repeated warnings.

Key attendees at the meeting included DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Jahirul Islam, Secretary Mohammad Nasim Ahmed, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahabubur Rahman Talukder, along with other divisional heads and regional officials.
