Dhaka: Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has launched its first-ever Debating Club aimed at developing journalists' logical, analytical, and intellectual skills. The inaugural ceremony of the Debating Club was held at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of DRU on Sunday afternoon.

According to United News of Bangladesh, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, MP, attended the event as the chief guest. He emphasized that DRU has long provided a platform where programs can be held without obstruction and expressed hope that it would remain open to all voices, including criticism of the government. Hajjaj stated, 'We want DRU to give that opportunity to those who want to speak against our government. If mistakes are not pointed out, how will we correct them? Everyone has the right to highlight the government's mistakes for the sake of a welfare state,' adding that he would support initiatives of the debating club, including sponsorship.

Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron highlighted that DRU is one of the largest and most united organizations of journalists in the country. He praised the solidarity among DRU members during times of happiness, sorrow, crisis, and disaster, noting that the organization set a shining example of humanity by supporting journalists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kiron further stated that the debating club would help strengthen logic, critical thinking, and social awareness, urging journalists to ensure objective and responsible reporting.

DRU President Abu Saleh Akon remarked on DRU's important role during past political movements, affirming its longstanding support for the rights of journalists and democracy. General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel expressed that the debating club would enhance members' professional skills and leadership qualities, seeking cooperation from all concerned for its success.
