Dinajpur:Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain visited the historic Ghoraghat Paragana Fort and the ancient Sura Mosque in Ghoraghat upazila, accompanied by State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the visit to the fort, the ministers were briefed by officials on its history, archaeological value, and current condition. They discussed preserving and developing the historic site with local residents.
Dr. Zahid emphasized that the BNP is committed to preserving history and heritage, and assured that initiatives would be undertaken to protect the Ghoraghat Paragana Fort. Mahmud Khaiyam mentioned plans to preserve the Mughal-era relics, including officially identifying the fort's location and ensuring its preservation in an aesthetically suitable environment.
Local folklore suggests that the Ghoraghat Paragana was originally established on approximately 350 acres beside the Karatoya River during the Mughal period for horse rearing and military training. A moat surrounded three sides of the area, with a high earthen embankment providing protection. However, parts of this area have been occupied by outsiders over time, and locals claim that soil from the embankment has been sold to brick kilns.
Later, the ministers toured the Sura Mosque, where they observed its architectural features and construction techniques, learning more about its historical significance from the local community.
