Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today emphasized the importance of Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon in the anti-autocracy democratic movement of the 1990s. Fakhrul highlighted Dr. Milon's significant role and ultimate sacrifice in the struggle for democracy during a message commemorating Shaheed Dr Milon Day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul stated, "Shaheed Dr. Shamsul Alam Khan Milon is an important and unforgettable name in the anti-autocracy democratic movement of the 1990s. Dr. Milon's self-sacrifice will be written in golden letters in the history of democratic movements." He reminded the public of the events of November 27, 1990, when Dr. Milon was martyred by government forces during the anti-autocracy movement and expressed his prayers for Dr. Milon's soul.
Fakhrul elaborated on the circumstances of Dr. Milon's martyrdom, describing him as a source of inspiration in the fight against authoritarian regimes. He criticized the Awami government's 16-year rule, accusing it of stripping citizens of their democratic rights, including the right to vote and freedom of speech, and highlighted the oppression faced by BNP leaders and activists.
Addressing ongoing political challenges, Fakhrul noted that conspiracies against the nation persist despite the success of the student-people's movement in August 2024, which aimed to free the country from autocracy. He voiced his confidence in the unity of the people and expressed his belief that Dr. Milon's sacrifice would inspire the continued pursuit of a strong democratic foundation.
