Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has requested all not to drive on the wrong side and rickshaws on unauthorized roads.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali in a public notice issued yesterday highlighted the frequent observation of motorized and non-motorized rickshaws operating on the wrong side of various city roads.

The notice emphasized that rickshaws are often seen on main city roads, which are designated off-limits for such vehicles. In many instances, passengers of rickshaws insist on traveling in the wrong direction, thereby disrupting normal traffic flow, escalating traffic congestion, and causing accidents.

The notice further explained that confrontations sometimes arise between passengers and drivers with traffic police and members of the traffic assistance group (TAG). In such situations, it becomes necessary for police personnel on duty to take legal action against those causing disturbances, as these actions constitute criminal offenses.

Additionally, the public notice pointed out that motorcycles and CNG-run auto-rickshaws are also frequently observed on the wrong side of city roads. This behavior contributes to frequent road accidents and exacerbates traffic congestion. In several cases, passengers and drivers hinder enforcement agencies from taking necessary legal actions, the notice noted.

The notice also drew attention to vehicles bearing nameplates of various government offices and professional identities that disregard traffic rules by driving on the wrong side and parking recklessly on roads. The DMP requested cooperation from rickshaw passengers, rickshaw pullers, motorcyclists, and other drivers from public and private sectors to adhere to traffic regulations.

The notice concluded with a warning that appropriate legal action will be taken against those who disobey the order, seeking everyone’s cooperation to ensure road safety and smooth traffic management.
