Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzad Ali today sought cooperation from all concerned in abiding by traffic rules to maintain order on the roads. The DMP chief also urged everyone to be vigilant so that no new auto-rickshaws can enter the main roads in the capital city for the sake of road safety. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DMP Commissioner made the call when a delegation of battery-powered rickshaw drivers, owners, garage owners, and members of the rickshaw-van, easy bike workers' union met with him at the DMP headquarters. The DMP Commissioner emphasized that, in accordance with a court order, auto-rickshaws will no longer be allowed on main roads, though they will continue to operate on different lanes as before. The meeting was attended by Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Md. Israel Hawlader and Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Khondaker Nazmul Hasan, among others. Recently, battery-powered rickshaw drivers had been protesti ng in various parts of the capital, demanding a suspension of the High Court's ruling to ban these vehicles. On November 25, the apex court granted a one-month stay on the High Court's order to ban battery-powered rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area within three days. In response to the situation, a delegation of rickshaw drivers and owners was called for discussions to address their concerns and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
