Dhaka:The dredging and beautification project for Dhanmondi Lake has officially commenced, with the aim of enhancing this historic water body for both local residents and the wider population of Dhaka.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam inaugurated the project, highlighting it as a key election promise. He noted the longstanding demand for the lake's development and modernization, which led to an initial allocation of Taka 26 crore after discussions with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during the election period.

The project includes the removal of accumulated sludge from the lakebed, aiming to extract around 700 cubic meters of sludge daily. This effort is expected to increase the lake's water-holding capacity, restore its natural flow, and improve ecological balance.

Two separate projects have been initiated, which involve designing the area to be more accessible and attractive for public use, with facilities for recreation and exercise. Plans include improvements to walkways, along with the construction of a library, gymnasium, and a Nazrul Mancha.

Minister Rabiul emphasized the necessity of preserving Dhanmondi Lake as an essential green space in Dhaka, stressing that beautification efforts must be complemented by environmental conservation. He urged local residents to maintain the cleanliness of the lake, highlighting that its upkeep is a shared responsibility.

The project is not only significant for the residents of Dhanmondi but also holds importance for the entire city as it provides much-needed open spaces and recreational opportunities. The minister called for coordinated efforts from all stakeholders to ensure the lake's successful development and management.

Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, along with other officials and local representatives, attended the inauguration event.
