Dhaka:A Dhaka court has granted a one-day remand to Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, a former lawmaker and leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, in connection with an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Beruni Mir following a hearing on Saturday afternoon. The case involves accusations of disorderly conduct and obstructing government duties.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station, had initially requested a five-day remand for Akhtaruzzaman. The incident, detailed in the First Information Report (FIR), occurred on Thursday morning. Passengers arriving from Madina on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight experienced a shortage of trolleys and delays at Belt No. 8, leading to rising frustration.
The situation prompted Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad to intervene at the request of Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain. During this intervention, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly confronted Ragib Samad aggressively, threatening and verbally abusing him and making disparaging remarks about the Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister.
The FIR also claims that Akhtaruzzaman's protocol assistants recorded videos in the airport's restricted Key Point Installation area, exacerbating the tension. When asked to stop by Security Supervisor Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly responded with verbal abuse and physical assault.
Further allegations include Akhtaruzzaman throwing bottles of holy Zamzam water from passengers trolleys, causing damage, and displaying hostile behavior towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by DB police at his residence in the Cantonment area on Friday and was subsequently shown arrested in the ongoing case.
