Narayanganj:A surge in dengue cases has overwhelmed hospitals in Narayanganj, leading to patients being treated on floors and verandas due to a shortage of beds.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Azharul Islam, a resident of Kuripara, contracted dengue while at Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital for his wife's delivery and has been receiving treatment on the hospital's veranda for three days. Similarly, Mashiur Rahman from the Deobhog Madrasah area is being treated on the veranda floor due to the lack of available beds.

During a visit to the hospital on Thursday, it was observed that at least 10 dengue patients were receiving treatment on the ward's verandas and floors. Nurses reported that while new dengue patients are being admitted daily, some recover and are discharged, with 23 patients currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Hospital records show a significant increase in dengue admissions, with 193 patients admitted in September, up from 119 in August and 35 in July. So far, 376 dengue patients have been treated at the hospital this year. Dr. Nazmul Hasan Bipul, the hospital's resident medical officer, acknowledged the high number of patients and the inadequate bed capacity, noting that arrangements are being made on verandas and floors for critically ill patients.

The District Civil Surgeon's Office reported 33 new dengue cases in Narayanganj in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday morning. As of September 29, the district has recorded 2,387 cases, just shy of the 2,398 cases recorded for the entirety of 2025. Officially, there have been no dengue-related deaths in Narayanganj this year, although several residents reportedly died while being treated in Dhaka, including Abu Siddique and two women from Sonakanda Chowdhurypara.

Dr. Nafia Islam from the Narayanganj City Corporation stated that regular mosquito-control measures and awareness campaigns are ongoing. Civil Surgeon Dr. SM Sakhawat Hossain emphasized the national pressure on hospitals due to rising dengue cases, especially with Victoria Hospital's limited capacity of 100 beds. He urged public vigilance and emphasized the importance of prevention through government and community efforts.

Nationwide, four dengue-related deaths and 1,978 new hospital admissions were reported in the 24 hours up to Thursday morning, bringing the death toll to 249 this year. Since January 1, 81,598 dengue patients have been hospitalized across the country, with 75,699 recovering.
