Barishal: Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, today expressed his view that the forthcoming general elections present a significant opportunity to maintain the momentum of ongoing reforms in the country. Dr. Bhattacharya, a noted economist and public policy analyst, addressed the challenges posed by an "anti-reform coalition" that has historically impeded the nation's development. He identified businessmen, politicians, and bureaucrats as forming a trinity of forces that create substantial barriers to progress.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Bhattacharya made these remarks at a pre-election regional workshop titled 'Citizen's Manifesto,' organized by Citizen Platform Bangladesh at Hotel Grand Park in Barishal. He emphasized that the nation is currently navigating through a period of crisis, with justice, elections, and reforms being central issues.
The workshop saw participation from over a hundred representatives from various sectors, who engaged in discussions on the Citizen's Manifesto. The event underscored the local problems of Barishal and called for effective solutions from the forthcoming government.
Professor Mostafizur Rahman, another Distinguished Fellow of CPD, delivered the closing speech at the program. Participants included citizens from the Barishal region, educators, researchers, local political party representatives, lawyers, members of marginalized communities, entrepreneurs, and professionals, all contributing to the consultation meeting.
Prominent figures such as Barishal Metropolitan Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babar, Manisha Chakraborty of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Barisal District Convener of Nagorik Citizens' Party (NCP) Abu Sayeed Musa, and Professor Shah Sajeda also addressed the gathering, adding diverse perspectives to the discussion.
