Death toll rises to 8 in Khagrachhari road accident

KHAGRACHHARI, Feb 3, 2017 (BSS) - The death toll from the road accident occurred this morning rose to eight as another victim succumed to her injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Earlier, seven people were killed and 15 others

injured as a cargo-loaded truck ran over the devotees participating in a funeral programme in Alutila area here.

The deceased were identified as Naimra Marma, 40, Uchinu Marma, 15,

Shathoepro Marma, 15, Pulu Marma, 30, Bobi Marma, 30, Ancaching Marma, 18, Tuntuni Marma, 06, and Owecraching Marma, 05.

Police said the accident took place at about 11.30 am when a goods-laden truck ran over the people thronged at a funeral programme at Battali under Matiranga upazila of the district as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving seven people dead on the spot and injuring others.

Being informed, police, members of the armed forces and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the victims and sent them to the Sadar Hospital.

Among the wounded, Bobi succumbed to her injuries at the CMCH and nine were admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, the sources added.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Matiranga Upazila Police Station Shahadat Hossain Titu said, "The police in association with the local people have detained the driver of the truck who tried to flee from the spot."

Parliament member of Khagrachhari constituency Kujendra Lal Tripura and municipality mayor Rafiqul Alam have visited the injured at the Sadar Hospital.
