Dhaka: Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam announced in Parliament that the government is in the process of formulating a comprehensive Cyber Security Strategy for the years 2026-2030 to bolster the nation’s cyber security framework. “The preparation of the ‘Cyber Security Strategy (2026-2030)’ by the National Cyber Security Agency under the Information and Communication Technology Division is underway to strengthen cyber security,” he stated.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Minister made this statement in response to a starred question from treasury bench lawmaker AKM Fazlul Haque Milon of Gazipur-5. He further mentioned that a preliminary draft of the strategy has already been completed, indicating progress in the initiative to enhance the country’s cyber security measures.
In response to another inquiry from ruling party MP Abdullah Al Amin of Narayanganj-4, Mahbub Anam discussed government efforts to make internet and mobile services more affordable. He highlighted the implementation of the ‘One Country, One Rate’ initiative for broadband internet, aimed at reducing internet and mobile usage costs. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has issued directives for all Internet Service Providers and International Internet Gateways to cut internet prices, making services more accessible to marginalized communities. On February 18, 2026, BTRC set broadband internet tariffs at Tk 400 for 5 Mbps, Tk 500 for 10 Mbps, Tk 800 for 20 Mbps, and Tk 1,200 for 40 Mbps connections.
Addressing a question from BNP lawmaker Zahidul Islam Dhalu of Naogaon-5, the minister mentioned the ongoing efforts for the commercial expansion of 5G technology across Bangladesh. He noted that 4G technology has already been rolled out nationwide, while limited-scale 5G services are available in approximately 40 locations in Dhaka, including the airport, railway stations, and major residential and commercial areas. Beyond the capital, limited 5G services have been deployed in over 400 areas across divisional cities such as Chattogram, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal, Khulna, and Sylhet, as well as in Cox’s Bazar.
Mahbub Anam emphasized the government’s commitment to providing fast and reliable internet for all, as outlined in its electoral manifesto. He stated that BSCPLC currently operates two submarine cable systems, SEA-ME-WE-4 and SEA-ME-WE-5, through its landing stations in Cox’s Bazar and Kuakata, with a combined capacity of 7,220 Gbps. Presently, around 4,100 Gbps of bandwidth is supplied nationwide, maintaining 99.999 percent network reliability. The ongoing SEA-ME-WE-6 project is expected to meet the growing bandwidth demands of 5G services and expand broadband connectivity in rural areas. If operational by the end of 2026, it will add an additional 30,000 Gbps of bandwidth, increasing the country’s total international bandwidth capacity to approximately 38,000 Gbps.
