Chattogram: The much-awaited 5th convocation ceremony of Chattogram University (CU) is set to take place on Wednesday, marking a significant academic event as it occurs after a nine-year hiatus. A total of 22,586 graduates will participate in this grand ceremony, celebrating their academic achievements.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the main convocation ceremony is scheduled for May 14, from 2 pm to 4 pm, at the university’s central playground. The event will be graced by the presence of Chief Adviser, Nobel Laureate, and former CU teacher, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Yunus will also be awarded an honorary D.Litt degree during the ceremony. Other notable attendees include Education Adviser Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Md. Fouzul Kabir Khan, Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum, and University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. SMA Faiz.
CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yahya Akhtar will preside over the event. In a recent press conference held at S Rahman Hall of the Chattogram Press Club, Dr. Akhtar shared insights into the extensive preparations for the convocation. The university boasts 48 departments, six institutes, and five research centres under 10 faculties, with a current enrollment of 28,515 students, supported by 996 teachers, 445 officers, and 1,528 employees.
During the convocation, 22,586 students will receive their degrees. This includes 42 Ph.D. holders and 33 M.Phil. recipients, with the remainder receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Degrees will be distributed across various disciplines, with Arts and Humanities awarding 4,988 degrees, Science 2,766, Commerce 4,593, Sociology 4,158, Biology 1,685, Engineering 796, Law 703, Education 317, Marine Science 284, and Medicine 2,296.
High-quality food, fruits, and gift items such as bags, souvenirs, pens, pins, wallets, and convocation hats have been arranged for the guests. Security has been heightened through collaboration with police and intelligence agencies, with strict entry regulations in place requiring convocation cards for participants.
Special transportation plans have been made to facilitate guest arrivals. A fleet of 100 large buses will transport attendees to the campus starting at 6 am from various city locations. Additionally, a special shuttle train schedule has been organized, with only designated buses and shuttle transports permitted entry through Main Gate No. 1.
Convocation Celebration Committee Member Secretary and Acting Controller of Examinations, Professor Dr. Md. Enayet Ullah Patwari, expressed optimism for a smooth and orderly event.
